Shopify product image sizes

Shopify is the most forgiving of the major platforms about image rules and the least forgiving about inconsistency, because on your own store there is no marketplace grid hiding your mistakes.

The recommended size

Use square images at 2048 × 2048 pixels. Shopify supports images up to 20 megapixels and up to 20MB per file, so 2048 square sits comfortably inside the limits while giving themes enough resolution for zoom and for high-density phone screens.

Shopify serves resized renditions of your originals automatically, so uploading a sensible large original and letting the platform generate the smaller variants is the correct workflow. You do not need to pre-generate thumbnails.

Consistency beats resolution

This is the point that matters most and gets the least attention. On a marketplace, every seller's photos sit in the same grid and yours are judged one at a time. On your own Shopify store, your photos are the entire visual identity, and they are seen side by side in a collection grid where every inconsistency is obvious.

If one product is shot on warm white and the next on cool grey, if one is tightly cropped and the next floats small in the frame, the collection page looks disorganised even when each photo is individually competent. Fix this by locking three things across your whole catalogue: identical aspect ratio, identical background colour, and roughly identical product-to-frame ratio. Padding every photo onto the same square canvas with the same background colour handles the first two mechanically.

Aspect ratio and theme behaviour

Most Shopify themes let you choose how product images are displayed in collection grids — typically some variation on cropping to a fixed ratio or fitting the whole image with padding. Themes that crop will centre-crop your images, so a non-square upload loses its edges. Themes that fit will pad with the theme background, which looks wrong if your photo background does not match it.

Uploading squares sidesteps both problems. Whatever the theme does, a square either fits exactly or crops symmetrically.

File size and conversion

Because you own the storefront, you also own its performance. Images are almost always the largest asset on a product page, and page speed has a measurable relationship with conversion — particularly on mobile, where a large share of storefront traffic arrives on a phone connection.

Export JPG at 85–90% quality rather than maximum. At 2048px the perceptual difference is negligible and the file is roughly a third of the size. WebP is smaller still at equivalent quality and is well supported by current browsers, so it is worth considering if your theme handles it cleanly.

Alt text is not optional

Every product image should have descriptive alt text. It is what screen readers announce, it is what displays when an image fails to load, and it is a genuine ranking signal for Google Images, which drives real product discovery. Describe the product as you would to someone who cannot see it — "walnut cutting board with juice groove, 18 by 12 inches" — rather than stuffing keywords.

Frequently asked

What size should Shopify product images be?

Square 2048 x 2048 pixels is the recommended size. Shopify supports images up to 20 megapixels and 20MB, and generates smaller renditions automatically.

Should Shopify product images be square?

Yes, in almost all cases. Themes either crop to a fixed ratio or pad to fit, and squares behave predictably under both, keeping collection grids visually consistent.

Does image file size affect Shopify sales?

Yes, indirectly. Images are usually the heaviest asset on a product page and page speed correlates with conversion, especially on mobile. Exporting JPG at 85 to 90 percent quality cuts file size substantially with no visible loss.
