Etsy image sizes: what to upload and why

Etsy recommends at least 2000px on the shortest side. The harder part is that Etsy shows the same photo in half a dozen differently-shaped slots — so the size you upload is only half the decision.

The short answer

Upload square images, 2000 × 2000 pixels, as JPG. That clears Etsy's recommended minimum of 2000px on the shortest side, gives the zoom viewer enough detail to work with, and survives every crop Etsy applies without losing anything important.

Why square, when Etsy accepts other shapes

Etsy accepts non-square photos, but it does not display them uniformly. Your primary photo appears in search results, in the listing page's main viewer, in the app, in cart thumbnails and in Etsy's own marketing surfaces — and those slots do not share one aspect ratio. Etsy fits your image into each slot, which for a landscape photo in a squarer slot means letterboxing or a centre crop you did not choose.

When you upload a square, every one of those crops is either the whole image or a centred subset of it. You stop guessing. This is why nearly every high-volume Etsy shop standardises on square photos even though the platform never demands it.

Resolution: 2000px is a floor, not a target

The 2000px recommendation exists because of zoom. When a buyer hovers or pinches, Etsy serves a larger rendition of your file. If your original is 900px, there is no larger rendition — the viewer upscales, and detail that decides a purchase (stitching, grain, hallmark, glaze) turns to mush. Shoot as large as your camera allows, then size down to 2000 for upload. Never size up: added pixels are invented, and the softness is visible.

File size and format

JPG is the right default for photographs. Export at 85–90% quality rather than 100% — at 2000px the visual difference is essentially undetectable while the file drops to roughly a third of the size. That matters more than it sounds: the majority of Etsy browsing is on phones, often on mobile data, and slow-loading images cost you buyers before they have formed an opinion about the product.

Use PNG only when you genuinely need transparency, such as a digital-download preview. For photographs PNG produces a far larger file for no visible gain.

The ten-photo slot strategy

Etsy gives every listing up to ten image slots, and empty slots are wasted sales surface. A pattern that works well: the first photo is the product alone on a clean, consistent background; the second is the product in use or worn, so buyers can judge scale; the third shows scale explicitly against something familiar; the middle slots cover angles, texture close-ups and colour variants; and one late slot carries a plain graphic listing dimensions and materials, which pre-empts the questions that otherwise arrive as messages.

Keep the background identical across every photo in a listing. Mismatched whites — one shot cool, one warm — look sloppy in a grid even when each individual photo is fine.

Common mistakes

Uploading straight from the phone camera roll. Phone photos are typically 4:3, so Etsy centre-crops them for square slots and the top of a tall product gets cut. Pad to square first.

Letting each photo have its own background. Shot-to-shot colour drift is the single most common thing separating amateur listings from professional ones.

Text over the edges. Anything within about 10% of the frame edge is at risk from a crop in some slot. Keep captions well inside.

Frequently asked

What size should Etsy listing photos be?

Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels on the shortest side. Square 2000 x 2000 JPG images are the safest choice because Etsy displays the same photo in several differently shaped slots and a square survives every crop.

Does Etsy crop my photos?

Yes. Etsy fits your image to each display slot, which can mean a centred crop or letterboxing for non-square photos. Uploading square images means every crop is a centred subset of what you intended.

Should I use JPG or PNG on Etsy?

JPG for photographs, exported at 85 to 90 percent quality. Use PNG only when you need transparency, such as a digital download preview.
