Amazon product image requirements
Amazon is the strictest of the major marketplaces about images, and it is the only one where getting it wrong can suppress the listing rather than just make it look bad.
The rules that matter most
Amazon's main image carries hard requirements. It must show the product against a pure white background — RGB 255, 255, 255, not off-white or light grey. The product should fill roughly 85% of the frame. It must be the actual product, professionally photographed, with no logos, watermarks, borders, inset images, text overlays, props or accessories that are not part of what you are selling. No mannequins for most categories, no packaging unless the packaging is the product.
Break these and the outcome is not merely aesthetic. Non-compliant main images can have the listing's buy box affected or the listing suppressed from search entirely, which takes the ASIN to zero sales until it is fixed.
Dimensions and the zoom threshold
The number to remember is 1000 pixels on the longest side. That is the threshold at which Amazon enables its zoom function, and zoom is strongly associated with conversion because it is how buyers substitute for handling the product. Below 1000px you simply do not get the feature.
In practice, upload 1600 × 1600. It is comfortably above the zoom threshold, gives the zoom viewer real detail to reveal, and keeps file sizes manageable. Amazon accepts much larger files, up to 10000px on the longest side, but past a certain point you are paying in upload time and page weight for detail nobody perceives.
Square is the right default. Amazon's grid and detail page are built around square renditions, and a square main image means no surprise crops.
Format
JPEG (.jpg) is the recommended format and what you should use for essentially all product photography. Amazon also accepts TIFF, PNG and GIF, but JPEG at high quality is the correct trade-off for photographs. Images must be in RGB or CMYK colour, sRGB being the sensible choice.
Secondary images are where you actually sell
The main image is a compliance exercise: white background, product, done. Every rule above about props, text and lifestyle context applies only to the main image. Your secondary slots are far freer, and that is where the selling happens — lifestyle shots showing the product in a real setting, scale references, close-ups on materials and construction, annotated diagrams calling out features, dimension graphics, and what is in the box.
Sellers routinely leave these slots empty, which is a straightforward waste. A buyer comparing two similar products will usually pick the one they understand better, and understanding comes from images far more than from bullet points.
Getting to a true pure white background
Photographing on a white sheet rarely gives you 255,255,255 — it gives you a light grey with a colour cast, because white surfaces reflect the ambient light around them. Two practical fixes. Shoot against white with generous, even lighting and then lift the background to true white in editing. Or shoot the product cleanly, cut it out, and place it on a genuinely white canvas.
If your photos are already cut out or shot on near-white, padding them onto a true white canvas at the right dimensions is the last mechanical step, and it is exactly what the tool on this site does in bulk — set the background swatch to #ffffff and the fit mode to leave a margin, so the product lands centred with clean white around it.
Frequently asked
What size should Amazon product images be?
At least 1000 pixels on the longest side to enable zoom. 1600 x 1600 is a good practical target: well above the zoom threshold with manageable file sizes.
Does an Amazon main image have to be on a white background?
Yes. The main image must be on a pure white background of RGB 255, 255, 255, with the product filling about 85 percent of the frame and no text, logos, watermarks or extra props.
Can Amazon suppress my listing over images?
Yes. A main image that violates the requirements can lead to the listing being suppressed from search results until the image is corrected, not merely displayed poorly.
What image format does Amazon prefer?
JPEG is the recommended format for product photography. TIFF, PNG and GIF are also accepted, in RGB or CMYK colour.
