The Best Budgeting Apps in 2026: Real Pricing Math
Every price below was verified against the official pricing page on August 10, 2026 — not copied from another review site. Where a vendor shows a promo, we show both the promo and the renewal price.
The short version
- Best for strict zero-based budgeting: YNAB — still the deepest method, now clearly the priciest at $109/yr.
- Best all-rounder / best for couples: Monarch Core — $99.99/yr, investments included, free partner access.
- Best value if you'll budget manually: EveryDollar Free — genuinely free, zero-based, but no bank sync.
- Cheapest with bank sync: Quicken Simplifi — $3.99/mo (billed annually, first year; renews at $6.99/mo billed annually).
- Best for killing subscriptions, not budgeting: Rocket Money — you pick $7–$14/mo; budgeting is secondary.
- Best design (Apple-only households): Copilot — $95/yr, no Android.
The LedgerLens Zero-Based Budget Toolkit
Six sheets that do the arithmetic no app does for free
We built the spreadsheet we kept wishing these apps included. No macros, no sign-up, no subscription — it opens in Excel, LibreOffice and Google Sheets and it is yours permanently.
- Zero-based monthly budget — live “left to assign” counter, planned vs actual variance, and spend rolled up by fixed / variable / debt / savings.
- Debt payoff — ranks your debts snowball and avalanche side by side, and shows the months-to-zero and the interest you are paying each year by doing nothing.
- Sinking funds — turns the non-monthly bills (insurance, tyres, Christmas) into one monthly number to park now.
- Net worth tracker — twelve months, assets minus liabilities, month-on-month change.
- App break-even calculator — pre-loaded with the verified prices on this page: exactly what a paid app must save you each month to be worth its fee.
- Start Here — a plain-English 20-minute setup, including what to do the first time a category goes over.

Paid securely by Stripe. Your download link arrives instantly in your Stripe receipt. Free lifetime updates — when we re-verify prices, the break-even sheet is updated too. This is our own product, not an affiliate link: we make money on it, which is exactly why the rankings above are set before any monetization is considered.
Not ready to buy anything? Use our free debt snowball vs avalanche calculator — it compares both strategies side by side and runs entirely in your browser, no sign-up.
Two more free tools, same deal — no sign-up, nothing leaves your browser: the emergency fund calculator sizes your target from your actual risk factors instead of a generic “3 to 6 months”, and the sinking fund calculator works out what your irregular bills really cost per month — the number that quietly breaks most budgets.
Deciding between the top two? Read the head-to-head: YNAB vs Monarch (2026) — three-year cost math, the method difference that actually decides it, and the break-even each one has to clear.

Notes: Monthly billing is a bad deal everywhere it exists — YNAB monthly costs $179.88/yr (65% over annual), Monarch monthly $179.88/yr (80% over annual), EveryDollar monthly $215.88/yr (170% over annual). Copilot sells the annual plan on the web; its monthly price is only shown in-app. Simplifi's $3.99 is an intro rate on annual billing; we model renewal at $6.99/mo. Rocket Money's slider was $7–$14 on the official site at press time and is monthly-only.
True cost over 3 years (annual billing)
| App | Year 1 | Years 2–3 (each) | 3-year total |
|---|---|---|---|
| EveryDollar Free | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| Quicken Simplifi | $47.88 | $83.88 | $215.64 |
| EveryDollar Premium | $79.99 | $79.99 | $239.97 |

| Monarch Core (with 30% yr-1 promo) | $69.99 | $99.99 | $269.97 |
| Monarch Core (no promo) | $99.99 | $99.99 | $299.97 |
| YNAB | $109.00 | $109.00 | $327.00 |
| Rocket Money Premium (at $14/mo) | $168.00 | $168.00 | $504.00 |
| Monarch Plus | $199.00 | $199.00 | $597.00 |
The spread is real: a Rocket Money user at the top of the slider pays more than 2× a Simplifi user for a weaker budgeting engine. Price is not quality here — it's mostly positioning.

Which one fits you
| You are… | Get | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Paycheck-to-paycheck, want control | YNAB (or EveryDollar Free to start) | Zero-based budgeting forces every dollar to a job; YNAB's method is the whole product. Try EveryDollar Free first to learn the habit at $0. |
| A couple merging finances | Monarch Core | Free partner access, shared goals, investments and net worth in one place, and it's cheaper than YNAB. |
| Leaving Mint, want the closest feel | Monarch or Simplifi | Both are tracker-first apps. Simplifi is nearly half the renewal price; Monarch is deeper on investments and collaboration. |
| Drowning in subscriptions | Rocket Money | Cancellation concierge and bill negotiation are its real products. Set the slider to $7 — features are identical at every price. |
| All-Apple, design-sensitive | Copilot | Best-in-class iOS/Mac client and categorization; a non-starter if anyone in the household uses Android. |
| Budgeting on $0 | EveryDollar Free | The only genuinely usable free tier here — manual entry is the price you pay instead of dollars. |
Notes on each app
YNAB — $109/yr
- The zero-based method genuinely changes behavior; nothing else is as opinionated or as effective for chronic overspenders.
- 34-day trial with no card is the most honest trial in the category.
- Most expensive mainstream option, and prices have risen repeatedly over the years.
- No real investment tracking — pair with a free net-worth tracker if you need it.
Monarch — $99.99/yr Core, $199/yr Plus
- The best single replacement for Mint: budgets, cash flow, investments, net worth, and goals in one app.
- Partner gets full access free — the cheapest path to shared finances done properly.
- 2026's split into Core and Plus moved some advanced planning behind a $199 tier; check which tier has what you need before buying.
- 7-day trial is short for a habit product; start it when you have a free weekend.
Copilot — $95/yr
- Machine-learning categorization that actually learns; the least transaction-cleanup busywork of anything we've used.
- Now has a real web app alongside iPhone/iPad/Mac.
- Still no Android. For mixed-platform couples that ends the conversation.
Quicken Simplifi — $3.99/mo yr 1, then $6.99/mo (billed annually)
- Cheapest synced budgeting on the market, even at renewal price.
- The "spending plan" model (income − bills − savings = safe to spend) suits people who find envelopes fussy.
- No free trial — there's a 30-day money-back guarantee instead, which means handing over a card first.
- Less depth than Monarch on investments, less rigor than YNAB on budgeting.
Rocket Money — $7–$14/mo, your choice
- Subscription audit and cancellation concierge routinely pays for the app in month one.
- Same features at $7 as at $14 — always choose $7.
- Budgeting is shallow (the free tier caps you at two custom categories; real budgets need Premium).
- Bill negotiation takes 35–60% of your first-year savings — read that before saying yes.
- Monthly-only billing: $84–$168/yr with no annual discount.
EveryDollar — Free, or $79.99/yr Premium
- The free tier is a complete zero-based budget: unlimited categories, sinking funds, bill due dates, split transactions.
- Premium's $6.67/mo effective price undercuts YNAB by 27% for a similar method.
- Free means manual entry — that discipline is a feature for some, a dealbreaker for most.
- $17.99 monthly billing is the worst per-month price on this page; only ever buy annual.
- Tightly coupled to the Ramsey ecosystem and its debt-snowball orthodoxy.
Methodology
Prices were read directly from each vendor's official pricing page (or, where the vendor hides pricing behind an app, from the vendor's own published pricing article) on August 10, 2026. Promotional prices are shown alongside renewal prices, never instead of them. Three-year totals assume annual billing and current renewal prices. Feature rows come from vendor documentation and our own use of the products. When a vendor changes pricing, we update this page and the verified date; if you spot a discrepancy, email us and we'll fix it within a day.
