Times are US Eastern, as published by the exchange. A blank resumption time means the exchange has not scheduled one yet — that is normal early in a news halt, and a warning sign on a T12.
The halt tells you that something happened. It doesn't tell you what.
The exchange publishes a two-character code and nothing else. The actual market-moving item — the 8-K, the FDA letter, the short report, the guidance cut — hits the wires first, and the halt follows it. If you are reading the halt to find out why, you are already behind the people who traded the headline.
That gap is the whole game on a news halt. Reopening auctions after a T1/T2/T3 are priced by whoever already read the release; by the time it reaches a mainstream feed the auction has printed. If you trade halts, resumptions or low-float runners, you want the wire, not the halt log.

Every US trading halt code, decoded
Codes are set by the listing venue under the UTP/CTA plans. Grouped by what they actually mean for your position.
News
| Code | Official name | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| T1 | News Pending | The company has told the exchange that material news is coming. Trading stops BEFORE the news hits so nobody trades on a partial tape. Almost always followed by T2 then T3. |
| T2 | News Released | The news is now public and is being disseminated. The halt continues while the market digests it. |
| T3 | News and Resumption Times | News has been fully disseminated; the exchange has published the quote-resumption and trade-resumption times. Trading is about to restart. |
Volatility
| Code | Official name | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| T5 | Single-Stock Trading Pause | Legacy single-stock circuit breaker (a 10%+ move inside 5 minutes). Largely superseded by the LULD codes below. |
| T7 | Single-Stock Trading Pause In Effect | Legacy code indicating the single-stock pause is currently running. |
| LUDP | Volatility Trading Pause (LULD) | Limit Up-Limit Down. Price moved outside its price band and stayed there for 15 seconds, so trading pauses for 5 minutes. This is BY FAR the most common halt code on an active day, and the one that fires on news-driven spikes. Bands are percentage-based and widen for cheaper stocks and in the first/last 15 minutes. |
| LUDS | Volatility Pause — Straddle Condition | LULD pause where the National Best Bid or Offer is straddling the price band — the exchange cannot form a valid reopening auction, so it pauses. |
Regulatory
| Code | Official name | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| T6 | Extraordinary Market Activity | The exchange believes trading is being materially affected by a system problem, an erroneous order, or unusual activity. Trades may later be busted. |
| T12 | Additional Information Requested | The exchange has asked the company for more information and has not got a satisfactory answer. This is the one traders fear: T12 halts routinely run for days, and the stock frequently reopens far lower. Common on low-float runners and on companies facing a short report. |
| H10 | SEC Trading Suspension | The SEC itself has suspended trading — typically fraud, stale information, or a suspected pump. Suspensions run up to 10 business days and the stock usually reopens on the grey market at a fraction of its price. |
| H11 | Regulatory Concern | A halt at the request of another regulator, or a regulatory matter the exchange will not detail. |
Other
| Code | Official name | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| T8 | ETF Halt | Halt of an ETF or other derivative product, usually because the underlying components or the intraday indicative value cannot be priced. |
| IPO1 | IPO Issue Not Yet Trading | A new listing that has not opened for trading yet. Normal, not a warning sign. |
| M1 | Corporate Action | Halt for a corporate action — merger close, symbol change, reverse split, ticker migration. |
| M2 | Quotation Not Available | No quote is currently available for the security. |
| D | Security Deletion | The security has been deleted from Nasdaq / CQS. It is not coming back on this exchange. |
Compliance
| Code | Official name | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| H4 | Non-compliance With Listing Requirements | The issuer has fallen out of compliance with exchange listing rules (price, market cap, shareholder count, governance). |
| H9 | Not Current In Required Filings | The company is late on its 10-K/10-Q. Trading stays halted until the filings are made current. |
| O1 | Operations Halt — Non-compliance | Operational halt where the security is not in compliance with exchange requirements. |
Market-wide
| Code | Official name | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| MWC1 | Market-Wide Circuit Breaker — Level 1 | S&P 500 fell 7% from the prior close. All US equity trading halts for 15 minutes (no halt if it happens after 15:25 ET). |
| MWC2 | Market-Wide Circuit Breaker — Level 2 | S&P 500 fell 13%. All US equity trading halts for another 15 minutes (no halt after 15:25 ET). |
| MWC3 | Market-Wide Circuit Breaker — Level 3 | S&P 500 fell 20%. Trading is halted for the REST OF THE DAY, at any time it occurs. |
| MWCQ | MWCB — Resumption | Market-wide circuit breaker halt has ended; quoting and trading resume. |
| MWC0 | MWCB — Carry Over From Previous Day | The market-wide halt carried over from the prior session. |
Resumption
| Code | Official name | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| R1 | New Issue Available | Resumption code: the new issue is now available for quoting. |
| R2 | Issue Available | Resumption code: the issue is available again. |
| R4 | Qualifications Issues Resolved | Resumption code: the qualifications problem that caused an H4/H9 halt has been reviewed and resolved; quoting and trading resume. |
| R9 | Filing Requirements Satisfied | Resumption code: the delinquent filings have been made; quoting and trading resume. |
| C3 | Issuer News Not Forthcoming | The company never delivered the news it promised. The exchange gives up waiting and resumes trading anyway. |
| C4 | Qualifications Halt Ended | Maintenance requirements met; the qualifications halt is over and trading resumes. |
| C9 | Qualifications Halt Concluded — Filings Met | Filing requirements satisfied; the qualifications halt is concluded and trading resumes. |
| C11 | Halt Concluded By Other Regulatory Authority | Another regulator has lifted its halt; quoting and trading resume. |
What to do when a stock you hold gets halted
- Read the code before you react. LUDP is a 5-minute volatility pause and reopens by auction. T12 has no scheduled resumption and is a different risk entirely.
- Find the news, not the rumour. A T1 halt means the company told the exchange news is coming. The release itself is what prices the reopen.
- Do not assume your stop protects you. Stops do not trigger during a halt, and the reopening auction can print straight through them. Gap risk is realised at the auction, not on the way down.
- Check the resumption times. The exchange publishes a quote-resumption time before the trade-resumption time. The quoting period is where the reopening price is discovered — watch the imbalance, don't chase the first print.
- Halted after hours or pre-market? The halt carries into the regular session. Check the feed again before the open.
FAQ
What does it mean when a stock is halted?
A trading halt means the exchange has temporarily stopped all trading in that security. Orders cannot execute, but you can usually still cancel resting orders. Halts fall into three families: volatility pauses (LULD), news halts (T1/T2/T3), and regulatory or compliance halts (T12, H10, H4, H9). The reason code published by the exchange tells you which one you are in.
How long does a trading halt last?
A LULD volatility pause is 5 minutes and then reopens by auction. A news halt (T1 to T3) typically runs 30 to 60 minutes. A T12 information-request halt can last days. An SEC H10 suspension runs up to 10 business days and the stock generally reopens on the grey market at a much lower price.
What is a T12 halt and why is it bad?
T12 means the exchange asked the company for additional information and did not get a satisfactory answer. Unlike a news halt, there is no scheduled resumption. T12 halts commonly follow a suspicious price run in a low-float name or a short-seller report, they often last several days, and the reopening auction is frequently far below the halt price.
What is an LULD halt?
Limit Up-Limit Down. Every NMS security has a price band around a rolling 5-minute average. If the stock trades to the band edge and cannot come back inside it within 15 seconds, trading pauses for 5 minutes. Bands are wider for low-priced stocks and during the first and last 15 minutes of the session. LULD (code LUDP) is the most common halt code on any active trading day.
Can I sell a stock while it is halted?
No. No trades execute during a halt on the primary listing venue, and other venues must respect a regulatory halt. You can cancel existing orders, and in most cases place orders that will participate in the reopening auction — but you cannot get an execution until trading resumes.
Where does this halt data come from?
Directly from the official Nasdaq Trader trade-halts feed, which covers halts across US listing venues including NYSE, NYSE American, Nasdaq and Cboe. This page refetches it every 60 seconds and shows the raw exchange fields, including the resumption quote and trade times when the exchange publishes them.
